Islamabad: A commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba—a terrorist organization responsible for spreading violence on Indian soil—has been killed in Pakistan. According to reports, Lashkar commander Bilal Arif Salafi was stabbed and shot to death on Saturday, following the Eid prayers. Bilal was killed near Lashkar's now destroyed headquarters in Muridke. India had targeted this Lashkar terrorist stronghold during 'Operation Sindoor.'

Was Salafi Recruiting Terrorists for Lashkar?

The motive behind the killing remains unknown; however, sources suspect it may be the result of a family dispute. Sources further stated that those involved in the murder have been arrested. Bilal played a pivotal role within the terrorist organization; he was responsible for the recruitment of terrorists for the Muridke branch. His primary task involved identifying young individuals and grooming them for the organization. During this process, he also engaged in brainwashing people. However, he was not listed as a wanted fugitive in connection with any case in India.

Does Pakistan Top the Global Terrorism Index?

Pakistan—a nation that has nurtured and harbored terrorism for decades—has now itself fallen victim to it. In the 2026 edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report, Pakistan has, for the first time, ascended to the top spot. In 2025, Pakistan emerged as the country most severely affected by terrorism globally, recording a total of 1,045 terrorist attacks. These attacks resulted in 1,139 fatalities and left 1,595 people injured. Additionally, 655 individuals were taken hostage during this period.

Has TTP Emerged as Pakistan's Greatest Threat?

Within South Asia, Pakistan stands as the sole nation where the security situation deteriorated during 2025. Two of Pakistan's provinces—Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan—have borne the brunt of this terrorist violence. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has become a formidable challenge for Islamabad. The TTP carried out 595 attacks in 2025, resulting in the deaths of 637 people. Pakistan has accused the Taliban government in Afghanistan of providing sanctuary to the TTP.

Consequently, direct clashes have occurred between the two sides on multiple occasions since October 2025. Prior to Eid, Pakistan launched an airstrike on a medical facility in Kabul, killing 400 people. The Afghan Taliban have also carried out drone attacks against Pakistan. Both sides had agreed to a ceasefire for Eid.
